The Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) system has emerged as one of the most high-profile programs in the commercial imaging industry. The focus of the IRS program is to develop space technologies and applications in support of national development.

The Government of India Department of Space (DOS) began the IRS program in 1998 with the launch of IRS 1A followed by a series of satellites; 1B, 1C, 1D, P2, P3 and more recently RESOURCESAT-1 (P6). Data from these satellites have helped in areas such as Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development (IMSD), National Level Crop Acreage and Production Estimation (CAPE), wasteland inventory, landslides, zoning and forest inventory mapping.

RESOURCESAT-1

  • On October 17, 2003, RESOURCESAT-1 was launched into an 817 km sun-synchronous polar orbit.
  • RESOURCESAT-1 is the most advanced satellite built by ISRO, bringing continuity to the current IRS 1C and 1D programs.
  • RESOURCESAT-1 carries three sensors that deliver an array of spectral bands and resolutions ranging from 5.8 meters to 60 meters.
  • Data products derived from RESOURCESAT-1 can be used for advanced applications in vegetation dynamics, crop yield estimates, disaster management support, natural resource census as well as pest and disease assessment.
  • RESOURCESAT-1 has 120 Gigabits of on-board memory that allows for out-of-contact imaging.
